I came upon this quote by Elizabeth Gilbert the other day and thought it was quite lovely. To recognize oneself as a good friend is one of the answers growing older can offer us, I think.

When Van Gogh was a young man in his early twenties, he was in London studying to be a clergyman. He had no thought of being an artist at all. He sat in his cheap little room writing a letter to his younger brother in Holland, whom he loved very much.

I had not been aware of Rilke’s “Letters to a Young Poet” until a friend recently made reference to them. This, the eighth letter, is a stunning piece of writing. Of course Rilke’s brilliance always shows itself in the thoughts he had, beautifully expressed here.
