Is Art Product or Process?

Jeane Painting

In The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron takes up the issue of art as process rather than product. I’d really like you to think about this with me for a minute because I feel it’s one of the biggest reasons people don’t get around to doing their art. She points out that,“We inherit the obsession with […]

What a Savage and Beautiful Country!

The Real Thing

Like so many of these quotes, this one has been traveling through life with me for so long I no longer remember its author or its source. But it’s just too meaningful not to share. If you know its heritage, please let me know. “Where there is no risk, the emotional terrain is flat and […]

Can You Make Art Every Day?

Back to the studio

What is art? We’ve been batting this question around on the blog for a while now. Here is another aspect: It is getting to the easel (or the wheel, the piano, the computer, the camera). Without this simple thing, presenting ourselves to our art, there would be no art. Simple as that. So art is, […]

Art Opening at Hand Artes Gallery, Truchas, NM

Art Opening - Nude Year 2011

There was a wonderful opening at Hand Artes Gallery here in Truchas this past Saturday (see previous post Disparate Pieces). The subject of the show was the nude and its title, “Nude Year 2011: Voices of the Body,” expressed very well the great mix of art from several local artists including Anna Karin, Terry Gates, […]

Raymond Carver

Laundry

Raymond Carver was a poet and writer living in Port Townsend, Washington while I was still in Seattle. He died in 1988. I discovered him through a friend who owned a small poetry press in the same town. Scott published works by Tess Gallagher, the “good woman” Carver refers to in this poem. I love […]

Craig Scogin on What Is Art?

snow

As you know, I’ve asked some of my artist friends to write their views on art for the blog. This is photographer Craig Scogin’s response to the question, “What Is Art?” Some of you may remember that I have written about Craig Scogin before. He is the author of the book Not Really New… Not […]

About Me

About High Road Artist IMG 9461 150x150I am Jeane George Weigel, a working artist living in the mountains of northern New Mexico, and I do not think you and I are so different.

Every single one of us longs to know what we ache for, to “follow our bliss” as Joseph Campbell famously put it. You may find yours as an artist, a writer, or a teacher. But I am convinced we all yearn to live what is in our hearts. Some of us spend a lifetime discovering what that is. Some never find it.

This blog is about a journey of self-discovery, yours and mine. I write about the experience of living an artist’s life and share musings and photos as this living experiment unfolds. It is my hope you’ll join in the conversation by writing to me about your lives and I dearly hope something, here, will inspire you.
