Isabro Ortega, Master Carver

Isabro Ortega

Isabro Ortega grew up very poor in the village of Truchas, New Mexico. He and his friend, Rudy, were inseparable. There was a boy in town who had lots of toys while Isabro and Rudy had none. The other boy had an electric train set, so Isabro and Rudy made their own out of sardine […]

The Treasure

poetry reading

Alvaro Cardona-Hine is a treasure. There’s just no other way to put it. He was born in Costa Rica 84 years ago to a literary family, has published 18 books in Spanish and English, has composed works that have been performed by symphony orchestras and has painted masterworks that are collected all over the world. […]

Rules For Being Human

Contemporary Arts

A friend once worked as a guide for a wilderness program for troubled youth called Aspen Academy out of Loa, Utah. He brought this home from the field once and I thought it was so useful I’ve carried it around ever since. I hope you’ll find it instructive, too. Rules For Being Human 1. You […]

What Makes Life Meaningful?

Weigel House

Fifteen years ago, today, I died (see previous posts My Story Begins, My Re-Birthday, The Night I Died: The Whole Story, Part 1 and The Night I Died, the Whole Story, Part 2). There are people who don’t understand why I would mark this day, let alone celebrate it, but March 8th forever changed my course. […]

A Great Art Project, Part 2

Back to the studio

Because it can be somewhat intimidating buying your first art supplies when you begin to paint (not to mention overwhelming, confusing and expensive), I offer here a list of materials to get you started (this is for acrylic, although most of these colors are available in oils and watercolor as well). I recommend the following […]

A Great Art Project, Part 1

If you’re one of my students reading this right now I know you’ll chuckle to see me writing any kind of “how to” piece on making art. That’s because over all my years of teaching I have discouraged my students from reading or even looking at “how to paint” pieces. My reason for this is […]

About Me

About High Road Artist IMG 9461 150x150I am Jeane George Weigel, a working artist living in the mountains of northern New Mexico, and I do not think you and I are so different.

Every single one of us longs to know what we ache for, to “follow our bliss” as Joseph Campbell famously put it. You may find yours as an artist, a writer, or a teacher. But I am convinced we all yearn to live what is in our hearts. Some of us spend a lifetime discovering what that is. Some never find it.

This blog is about a journey of self-discovery, yours and mine. I write about the experience of living an artist’s life and share musings and photos as this living experiment unfolds. It is my hope you’ll join in the conversation by writing to me about your lives and I dearly hope something, here, will inspire you.
