Words For It – A Poem By Julia Cameron

I refer to Julia Cameron and her spectacular, life-changing book, The Artist’s Way, all the time because she and it have had a profound effect on my life. I offer here a poem she wrote to close out that beautiful book:

Words For It

I wish I could take language
And fold it like cool, moist rags.
I would lay words on your forehead.
I would wrap words on your wrists.
“There, there,” my words would say–
Or something better.
I would murmur,
“Hush” and “Shh, shhh, it’s all right.”
I would ask them to hold you all night.
I wish I could take language
And daub and soothe and cool
Where fever blisters and burns,
Where fever turns yourself against you.
I wish I could take language
And heal the words that were the wounds
You have no names for.

Love to you all,
Jeane

Wow I like the new site update:)  No more scrolling – very nice.  And I adore the poem…it is so loving and compassionate.

Thanks Grace. It’s still in process. We’ll get more of the old features back soon. I can’t WAIT to get the masthead photos back to those that go with the site. The generic ones bother me, but all will be restored soon. I love that poem, too.

Very intriguing poem. I like the set up of it, very different for me for I have not read much poetry and am learning a lot about poetry from the one’s I read that you post. They really make me think. I need to read them several times to get the real feel for it; I love that. I enjoy this one very much and can relate to the soothing words it relays. Thank You, Take Care, Cin =)

Glad you liked it, Cindy. Me too. She uses words to create such an interesting visual and also to comfort, as you say. She is definitely good with words and has done what she says she wishes she could do.

About Me

About High Road Artist IMG 9461 150x150I am Jeane George Weigel, a working artist living in the mountains of northern New Mexico, and I do not think you and I are so different.

Every single one of us longs to know what we ache for, to “follow our bliss” as Joseph Campbell famously put it. You may find yours as an artist, a writer, or a teacher. But I am convinced we all yearn to live what is in our hearts. Some of us spend a lifetime discovering what that is. Some never find it.

This blog is about a journey of self-discovery, yours and mine. I write about the experience of living an artist’s life and share musings and photos as this living experiment unfolds. It is my hope you’ll join in the conversation by writing to me about your lives and I dearly hope something, here, will inspire you.
