Chapter Six
Let me begin by saying, again, how sorry I am that it has taken me this long to get back to telling you the rest of this story (that of the thwarted travel-trailer trip to attend a wedding in California). But I am determined to get it told if only to find out for myself what it may all mean.
I woke early after a wonderful night’s peaceful sleep in our cool, quiet and uncrowded campground. The big storm that had dogged us on our way up through the canyon had passed in and out of Panguich during the night, leaving the air chilly and with a roiled up weather system in its wake.
So we headed out to explore the area under constantly changing skies…
We passed fertile fields and those left fallow, a landscape bearing witness to generations of dreams realized and lost…
Before long we started to climb, past red sandstone formations…
… cutting through several of them as well…
… up into the spires that began to announce our approach to Bryce Canyon. Kim had never been and I was excited to share it with him.
Parking near the lodge, we walked through some of the cabins that are available as rentals…
… built in the early 1900s, the little village nestled there on the rim of the canyon felt as though we’d traveled back through time…
I made a mental note to come back to Bryce again with the intention of spending some time in one of these fairyland cottages–at Christmastime in the snow?
There simply is no preparing one for seeing Bryce Canyon the first time.
Here is Kim…
… looking out at this…
… just as the sun was rising, setting the hoodoos on fire…
I don’t think there are many places in the world more beautiful than this or more serene…
We came back the next day to have breakfast in the lodge…
… and to say our goodbyes to Bryce…
We had traveled through adversity but our stay in Panguitch and the visits to Bryce had soothed us and allowed us to set our sights toward home.
Love to you all,
Jeane
Joy Patterson says
I thank you, once again, for continuing the adventure. I have to admit, I am always relieved when you post because I know then that you are doing well. Well enough to share your energy with this willing crowd of fans. More than that, the photos are amazing, and your storytelling sublime. I have been with you as we explored the land, the past, the wall paintings, the history you have researched and touched before presenting it to me. I go there often, especially after seeing the photos of Bryce. Are we almost home? I expect your are there, but how long will we wait for the homecoming. And when will the book be released? I have so much other stuff to tell, so look for an email from me. Hellos to Kim!
