I have carried this quote around with me for decades. It’s most often been on my refrigerator. There was a time when it was confusing to me, as well as challenging. Now I totally “get it” but it’s still, of course, challenging:
The thought manifest as the word;
The word manifest as the deed;
The deed develops into habit;
And habit hardens into character;
So watch the thought and its ways with care,
And let it spring from love
Born out of concern for all beings…
As the shadow follows the body,
As we think, so we become.
–Buddha

It’s actually pretty easy. You are who you make yourself to be.

Yes, but for me, anyway, those old embedded ways, those darker aspects of self, spring into my thoughts before I catch them sometimes. I find I’m more conscious more of the time now and will at least try to neutralize them once they’re thought, before they have a chance to “harden into character.”
