Simple Beauties–Luxuriating in the Small Stuff

Winter is coming and I decided it was definitely time for new flannel sheets. I have LOVED and ADORED my old sheets which is why they’re finally getting a little, well, thread bare. I remember the day they arrived via UPS. They were so sweet: covered with true-to-life-sized pastel candy hearts–you know the kind you used to buy as a kid–the ones that said I Love You and Hug Me? Well, every night was like getting my own personal valentine. And they were a deep, thick, luscious flannel to boot. Any wonder why I’ve loved them to within an inch of their lives?

So I received the Gaiam Living catalog in the mail the other day and wiffled through it to see if they had any enchanting flannel sheets and, guess what? They did! They are organic cotton and are called, “Walk in the Park,” because they are covered with an assortment of pale brownish green leaves, floating across the cream colored sheets as though they were blowing in the wind.

Well, this took no soul searching at all. I simply had to have them. It’s Christmastime after all so I ordered them as a gift for myself.

And they just arrived. Oh my, they are even more sumptuous than I could have hoped–a deep, soft pile, beautifully detailed, made in Germany. I put them right into the wash so I could sleep in them that very night. AND I used my wonderful new clothesline in the kitty enclosure (see previous post Yet More Small Pleasures) so they would be filled with the scent of fresh air.

Hung on the clothesline, blowing in the wind, the sun making sport of them, was a simple pleasure all by itself, let me tell you.

I made the bed that afternoon and looked forward to going to bed for the rest of the day (this is what simplifying a life creates–absolute pleasure in every small detail).

And I want to tell you it was everything I thought it would be: soft, sumptuous, embracing, delicious…  well, you get the idea. I guess some things are meant to be kept as sweet memories and not shared with the world.

Here are my wondrous new sheets the morning after. Need I say more?

Once again, here’s to life’s many simple beauties. May we recognize and celebrate them every single day.

Love to you all,

Jeane

Your sheets remind me of some rather interesting (to ME) botanical drawings with watercolor and ink on velum I once did…where ARE those I wonder…hmmm

House fires make all past adventures of art – new again!!! But I recalled the works…so some sort of inspiration is in the air.

Oh, I’m so sorry that you lost so much to fire. You have been amazing about grieving that and healing it. You are my model. That my sheets can remind you of past work and inspire you anew is a great blessing to me.

About Me

About High Road Artist IMG 9461 150x150I am Jeane George Weigel, a working artist living in the mountains of northern New Mexico, and I do not think you and I are so different.

Every single one of us longs to know what we ache for, to “follow our bliss” as Joseph Campbell famously put it. You may find yours as an artist, a writer, or a teacher. But I am convinced we all yearn to live what is in our hearts. Some of us spend a lifetime discovering what that is. Some never find it.

This blog is about a journey of self-discovery, yours and mine. I write about the experience of living an artist’s life and share musings and photos as this living experiment unfolds. It is my hope you’ll join in the conversation by writing to me about your lives and I dearly hope something, here, will inspire you.
