On the Road in New Mexico: Dwan Light Temple, Montezuma

One of the best surprises on our road trip to Las Vegas, NM, out of an entire day that was full of surprises, was the Dwan Light Temple. Located on the campus of the United World College in Montezuma, NM, just outside of Las Vegas, the temple is there for anyone who wants to use it. It sits on the grounds of what used to be a luxurious hotel and spa, up high above some hot springs, seemingly quietly waiting to be discovered.

Kim knew about it from previous visits and was happy to introduce it to me. Designed by Virginia Dwan, Charles Ross, and Laban Wingert in 1996, “The circular building features twelve large prisms in the apses and ceiling which spread rainbows across the floor and walls of the interior” (and outside the windows, turning trees and clouds into rainbows of color).

It is there for the college as well as the public, serving as an accessible meditative space for quiet contemplation. The Dwan Light Sanctuary also provides space for weekly yoga, summer concerts (classical and meditative guitar), special concerts throughout the year, memorials, religious ceremonies and celebrations (Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Native American, and Sufi), sound healing and poetry readings.

It is a remarkable resource for the community and for any of us who visit the area. It offered a quiet, magical respite from a full day and I left there refreshed and restored.

Love to you all,
Jeane

That is an amazing spot…so full of wonderful energy from all the wisdom and light moving through it constantly being left behind for the next visitors. The flow must keep it very healing.

I will go to this spot one day:)

Thanks for sharing your words and photos!

I thought of you when I was there Grace. You would most certainly love this place. Can you imagine attending a college where this is part of the campus? Wonderful!

About Me

About High Road Artist IMG 9461 150x150I am Jeane George Weigel, a working artist living in the mountains of northern New Mexico, and I do not think you and I are so different.

Every single one of us longs to know what we ache for, to “follow our bliss” as Joseph Campbell famously put it. You may find yours as an artist, a writer, or a teacher. But I am convinced we all yearn to live what is in our hearts. Some of us spend a lifetime discovering what that is. Some never find it.

This blog is about a journey of self-discovery, yours and mine. I write about the experience of living an artist’s life and share musings and photos as this living experiment unfolds. It is my hope you’ll join in the conversation by writing to me about your lives and I dearly hope something, here, will inspire you.
