Sandia Sunsets, Part 1

The Sandia Mountains are east of Albuquerque and more than a two hour drive from my home. Even so, I see them from my house as part of my southern view. They’re that little graceful, humped shape sitting above the rest of the hills—rather elegant I’ve always thought. Sandia means watermelon in Spanish. It’s thought the name derives from the reddish color of the mountains at sunset. I, personally, believe it’s all about the shape. Doesn’t that look like a huge watermelon to you? Being due south, there isn’t a lot of sunset activity over the Sandias from my land, but I wanted to share some of the few I’ve gathered. For whatever reason, this view is one of my favorites:

Love to you all,
Jeane

Thank you for the photos of the Sandias. They are very special, indeed. In the mid 70’s I arrived in ABQ via Greyhound bus with a girlfriend, our suitcases and guitars. It was dark and I had no idea what the area looked like. When I woke up the next morning and saw my surroundings and that mountain –  I was blown away. I never knew such beauty as the high desert existed. I said to myself, “this is for me”. I lived in and around those mountains for many years and am still inspired to create by the beauty there. My husband and sons will always consider New Mexico home and one day soon It will be again.
Your blog and photos are an inspiration as well. Thank you!

I’m so happy that the blog and photos are able to give you some sense of being in your old home here in New Mexico. It’s good to know you’ll be back with us soon. Are you still playing the guitar?

I am no longer playing. Maybe not such a  loss! I am now busy with lapidary work and silversmithing, bird sculpting, oil painting and occaisionally designing and building furniture with my husband. I love all things creative. New mexico nurtures that somehow, or maybe theres something in the water! : )

Sounds like you enjoy a deeply creative life. Yes, I think creativity is in the air in New Mexico for sure.

About Me

About High Road Artist IMG 9461 150x150I am Jeane George Weigel, a working artist living in the mountains of northern New Mexico, and I do not think you and I are so different.

Every single one of us longs to know what we ache for, to “follow our bliss” as Joseph Campbell famously put it. You may find yours as an artist, a writer, or a teacher. But I am convinced we all yearn to live what is in our hearts. Some of us spend a lifetime discovering what that is. Some never find it.

This blog is about a journey of self-discovery, yours and mine. I write about the experience of living an artist’s life and share musings and photos as this living experiment unfolds. It is my hope you’ll join in the conversation by writing to me about your lives and I dearly hope something, here, will inspire you.
