I awoke this morning to a serenade by a particular coyote. I was really glad to see him. He’s a young guy who was wounded a couple of months ago. I know this because he was out in my pasture all morning crying and it broke my heart. But, recently, he’s been back, walking with a limp but looking strong and healthy.
I wanted to share what William deBuys has to say about coyotes in the mountains of northern New Mexico. I quote from his wonderful book, The Walk, “Coyotes have been common here seemingly forever. From my first days in this valley, their mad songs have been a particular joy of early summer… the daily yipping and yowling that echoes through the valley… embodies, as perfectly as any sound on earth, a rhapsody of wildness.”
Not too long after I took these pictures a stallion chased the coyote off but I wasn’t able to grab my camera fast enough.

Beautiful photos, and thank you for your compassionate soul…it resonates and fills others with reminders of itself.

Thanks Grace. This was as close to the house as he’s ever been and I thought the morning light was lovely. I was telling a friend that his pack (about 15 coyotes) seems to have taken him back now that he’s healed. That makes me very happy. It was sad to see him always on his own, but he saw his way through all that to the other side. I have a lynx coming near the house now!
